      January 2007

The staff and governors would like to wish you all a healthy & prosperous New Year.

As we return to school many of you will have made resolutions for 2007 ~ perhaps to eat less, or take more exercise.

How many of you will have firmly promised to help your child more with school work?

There are many ways you can help – daily reading together is perhaps the most powerful. Talking to your child and sharing their homework tasks is important too. School staff are working very hard to teach your child and the blue Homework Diary and yellow Reading Diary contain information for parents.

Other ways you can help is to make sure your child gets enough sleep and starts each day with a suitable breakfast.  We still have strong links with the Chequerfield breakfast club – if you would like more details please contact Mrs Atack.

In the first week of term your child will also be bringing home their Topic Talk information sheet for this half term. Here you will find information about when weekly spellings to learn will be given out., PE days and other important activities.

Last term several parents came into school for an afternoon of maths activities with their child.  Everyone enjoyed the time they had together felt more positive about helping their child with maths work. The afternoon’s tutor is able to offer a 6 weekly session that will help parents do maths with their child. These will start on Thursday 11th January at 12.45. Information was sent out before Christmas, but if you need another copy please contact Mrs Greaves.

Many of you have access to computers at home, at work or in the local library. Many of you now have internet connections and we have been working hard to establish electronic ways of communicating with parents. Our school website is being remodelled and will very soon be completed. Here you will be able to find Newsletters, pictures and information about school life. If you would like to receive information sent electronically to you please let school know by emailing

        headteacher@willow-park.wakefield.sch.uk

~ we will then add you to our email group.

By now you will all have received your copy of the OFSTED report following the inspection in October 2006. Staff and governors are striving to make the improvements suggested by the inspector. Regular updates on progress are made available to the full governing body. If you would like to know more about what we are doing to improve the education offered to your child please contact Mrs Hardacre or any members of the Governing Body. We now have five parent governors ~ Mrs W Day, Mrs C McRitchie, Mrs J Downing, Mrs Willis and Mrs J Appleton.

School Lunch ~ the new menus for our school dinners are now available. These have been carefully planned to provide nutritious and healthy meals. Please contact Mrs Atack If you would like your child to have a cooked lunch.

SEAL

The letters SEAL stand for Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning. Each half term your child will be learning about a special focus to help them in school. This term’s theme is called Going for Goals and is all about motivation in and around school. There will be special assemblies and homework for your child to share with you.

Yorkshire Water – please read the attached letter carefully as this work will affect traffic movements in the area. The children will be having a special talk delivered by Yorkshire Water about the project.
